The Basics of Mini Split Heat Pumps

Mini split heat pump is a very common form of small HVAC device. They operate in much like conventional heat pumps in that they connect an external compressor to an internal unit. The main difference between mini split heat pumps and regular HVAC units is they don’t require ductwork. Mini splits work just like regular HV AC systems because the ducts are still needed but only one of the heat pump coils is connected. The coils are placed in a location where there is enough cold air circulating to reduce the humidity. As the air passes through these coils, the water condenses into water vapor. The moisture is then released into the air through ducts that are connected to the appropriate outlets.

Since this type of heat pump has a lower installation cost than other types, many homeowners are looking into installing them in their homes. The major advantage is that you will enjoy a more comfortable indoor environment as compared to the ones with condenser units. The efficiency of the mini split unit is also very high, which means that you can greatly reduce your energy consumption while still maintaining a good indoor temperature.

There are two basic types of mini splits. Dual-cycle ducted systems use two separate copper tubing, whereas single-cycle ducted systems use one single copper tube. Mini-splits can be installed in any area where HV ACs and ducted air source heat pumps are currently being used. For this reason, mini splits are often used in conjunction with air-source heat pumps.
